Black Spade is back in action after a few years in the shadows, teaming up with The Smoking Section and Los Angeles boutique Union LA to present his first ever mix tape, Build & Destroy. Spade - respected for his work as an individual M.C./producer and as part of the obscenely funk Hawthorne Headhunters - has been making mighty fine music for a minute now, offering up slightly wonky yet always soulful hip hop from his base in St. Louis, Missouri. Build & Destroy follows this same tried and true blueprint, with 18 tracks full of all sorts of beats and pieces to keep you entertained. Spade handles a lot of the production himself (under the guise of alter-ego Stoney Rock), and also borrows from Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Onra, amongst others. Spade also calls in favours from regular collaborators such as Adad, Rockwell Knuckles, Corey Black and the insanely talented Coultrain (hunt out his solo stuff, if you can find it), while TSS' Trackstar The DJ pieces the whole thing together well.
